Turns out Nevada tastes like pine, sage and juniper. Join Yelp’s on Tap week-long happy hour to taste the state
This month, Yelp Reno will take the city on a week-long happy hour journey “certain to please anyone with a propensity for pints!” Yelp partnered with Scott Emond and Jesse Kleinedler, owners of Under the Rose Brewing Company, to create a beer that is uniquely Nevadan, inspired and created by members of the community, to benefit the community. From July 21 – 28, anyone can pick up a pint of limited edition nevadabeer at any of ten local hangouts for hops.
THE BEER
At the beginning of June, Yelp, Under the Rose Brewing Co. and Drinkable Reno asked what Nevada would taste like as a beer. You answered and UTR made nevadabeer.
Scott brewed the beer out of 2-row, munich, wheat and caramel 120 malts then hopped it with citra and dry-hopped it with simcoe. Scott then created heavily concentrated “teas” out of sage, juniper and pine to test different combinations of flavors in small batches. Once he found the right balance, he increased the scale of the teas and combined them with the main batch to form nevadabeer. It’s an aromatic amber ale representing some of the most pervasive outdoor aspects of Nevada.
THE CAUSE
Yelp’s On Tap celebrates the art of craft brewing, Reno’s local arts and aims to improve the community one beer at a time. Pints of nevadabeer will be sold for $5 at all participating bars and restaurants and $1 from each pint sold will go to help Volunteers of America and The Generator Inc., a community art and maker space.
THE ART
Yelp’s On Tap is creating 10, one of a kind art installations, in the form of nevadabeer tap handles, at the participating bars and restaurants. Local artists created them using resources at The Generator and inspiration from each tap location.
“So there are four basic designs,” Michael Tragash of Yelp Reno, wrote. “One will be spherical Truckee River rocks arranged largest to smallest, stacked leather, concentric slices of wood arranged in the shape of our state and then one handle will be made in the shape of hand positioned as if it’s grasping another hand. This last one will be done by lifecasting the hand using dental alginate and molds, which will eventually hold molten aluminum to create the final product.”
